TACKY, TACKY, TACKY! HOW TO KEEP BRIDAL REGISTRIES POLITE

Honestly, not everybody loves the idea of bridal registries. These systems, though hardly anything new since the first registry was created in 1924, are not as universally accepted as say, mold and mildew cleaners. Everybody hates mold and mildew and naturally loves the idea of an air cleaner that only has benefits to give. Unfortunately, bridal registries do involve contributing and not necessarily receiving many good things.

In Bad Taste?
Some might say that bridal registries are tacky because the concept of gift giving is to be appreciative of whatever is given from the heart. Bridal registries don't necessary take the heart out of gift giving, though possibly the surprise. All that can truly be said is that bridal registries are very honest. Many couples love receiving gifts but are disappointed when they receive gifts that really aren't practical or even that pleasant. Bridal registries are in essence a couple honestly stating, "We appreciate your gifts...and please do think of our current needs."





What Is In Bad Taste
Many relatives and friends will participate in a bridal registry system, if for nothing else out of love and respect of the happy couple. However, this is on the condition that bridal registry etiquette is followed. For one thing, it is very impolite for a bride and groom to announce their registry plans by direct invitation. It's tantamount to going door to door and saying "We are now accepting gifts." So resist the impulse to send out invitations, even if a bridal registry prints some cute cards up for you.





Proper Ways To Spread The Word
How will people know of your plans? This is why people talk. Friends and relatives will be sure to spread the word by mouth and let people know where to shop. (Or a wedding website where links to your registries are found could be created featuring the announcement) This is the ideal way to broach a delicate subject matter. It lets wedding guests know that the couple is not asking for gifts, rather gifts are being given to them.

One other way to go about giving people contact information, though not as safe a method as word of mouth, is to have the contact information printed on the bridal shower invitations. The reason this is acceptable is because the couple does not throw the shower, rather somebody throws a party for them. In like manner, if it looks like someone else is organizing the registry effort on behalf of you, then it makes you look appreciative (which you are), while ensuring the delivery of many useful gifts. Be sure and act surprised!
