Proposal Site
On August 3, 2001, after five years and four months of dating, Jake proposed to Lauren. There is a camp near Lauren's parents' house called Pine Crest. The camp is nestled in the forest, it is a beautiful site. Lauren and Jake decided to hike up to the camp through the woods that Saturday. Once they reached the camp they talked about what a lovely wedding site it would make (though they soon found the camp does not allow the site to be used for weddings). There was a gazebo on the grounds and they stopped there to rest and visit. After a few minutes Jake leaned over, gave Lauren a hug and whispered in her ear, "Will you marry me?" Lauren looked over his shoulder at the sun rays shining through the leaves of the trees and took a memory snapshot of the scene, to always remember this moment. Then she said "Yes!" The planning commenced!
Engagement Ring
Before they could announce their engagement the couple wanted to have the engagement ring and a wedding date. Jake had wanted Lauren to come with him to choose the engagement ring, to get her one he knew she would love. The couple chose an exquisite sapphire and diamond ring. (Sapphire is Jake's birthstone.) Jake and Lauren gave quite a bit of thought to the wedding date. A few months earlier Lauren's sister had announced her engagement to be married in the beginning of the Summer of 2002. In the Summer of 2002 Jake would have already graduated from college, and wouldn't be in graduate school yet. It would be very difficult to find time to enjoy the wedding events and honeymoon while Jake was in graduate school, so the couple set the date of August 17, 2002. Now the sisters get to plan together!

Once they had decided on a ring and a date, they couldn't wait to share the news with family and friends. They wanted to announce their engagement to their parents in person if at all possible. The couple announced their engagement to Lauren's parents and Jake's brother over a meal Lauren had made just for the occassion. It was a very happy occassion with much talk about the planning of the wedding and their lives together. The couple was going to visit Jake's grandparents in September. At that time they would also see his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They were so tempted to just call everyone and tell them right away...but decided that getting to tell them in person was worth the wait. The couple announced their engagement to many of Jake's family members after dinner at his grandparents house. There were lots of hugs and congratulations, they all warmly welcomed Lauren into the family.
